| Chameleon Apparel Jonathan Bice, the founder and owner of Chameleon Apparel, is a Los Angeles based artist. Jonathan was born in Inglewood, California in August 1977. He started his art training at a young age, learning from his grandfather a commercial artist, Paul Bice Jr. He would fill notebooks with his sketches, that would at first glance look like a pattern for camouflage army apparel but upon closer study, thousands of little creatures would appear and come together to create larger beings. Jonathan studied all different media’s in college before finally scoring an apprenticeship with a local sculptor. Jonathan worked for him for over five years in his art foundry. After leaving, Jonathan took a break from trying to be a professional artist, but never quit drawing. Five years later, Jonathan put his designs on clothing and Chameleon Apparel was born. Jonathan’s eye catching designs are drawn in a style that implements Art Nouveau, tattoo art, and Rorschach’s ink blotches. The name for the line comes from the fact that every design needs to be looked at closely. Nothing is obvious, many of the lines do not connect and most designs are printed in a single color to help further obscure the images used to make the overall design. There are koi fish melting into flowers or suns or skulls that seem to grow into sea creatures. The further appeal of not making the images so obvious to the viewer is that ten people will look at the same design and those ten people will each see something different. It is always very revealing to hear what the viewer sees. With every design, Chameleon strives to challenge his audience. |
